Peanut foliage can look excellent while the part of the crop that matters most is struggling below it. Pegs need a loose, receptive surface and developing pods need a soil zone that can be checked and dug without unnecessary damage.
Establish an even stand before the canopy closes
Uneven plants make later flowering and digging decisions harder because maturity begins at different times. Seed placement and early soil condition deserve attention before the crop hides the rows.
Count plants in short sections and compare their stage, not only their presence. Repeating late plants signal an establishment issue worth recording.
Protect the pegging zone from sealing
The soil surface beneath the canopy must remain loose enough for pegs to enter and pod development to continue. Crusting, compaction, or standing water can reduce the value of otherwise vigorous top growth.
Part the foliage and press the soil gently. It should break apart without a hard sealed layer or a wet smear around developing pegs.

Match water decisions to pod development
A dry surface does not always mean the pod zone is dry, and a green canopy does not always mean roots are well supplied. Check soil at the active peg and pod depth before changing irrigation.
Compare soil from beneath the canopy with soil in the row center. Moisture should support pods without staying saturated in the lower profile.
Dig from samples, not from the calendar alone
Pod color, shell condition, field moisture, and weather all affect the digging window. Trial plants from more than one area help avoid treating a variable field as if every pod matured together.
Lift several plants and inspect pod maturity across the root system. Record differences between lighter and heavier soil before choosing a whole-field date.
